By Battery Brands Warehouse, Sydney
A flat battery in a Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar, Evoque, Discovery or Defender is rarely just a flat battery. These vehicles run complex electrical systems, and a replacement that is not done properly can cause warning lights, a shorter battery life and electronic faults.
Many owners assume the only safe option is the main dealer, and the quote reflects it. The good news is that you do not necessarily need the dealership. You need the correct battery, fitted properly, and registered with the vehicle's computer.
In this guide we explain what makes Land Rover battery systems different, why registration matters, and how Battery Brands Warehouse handles it in Sydney.
Why Range Rover and Land Rover Batteries Are Different
Older vehicles had a simple setup: swap the battery, tighten the terminals and drive away. Modern Land Rover and Range Rover models are built around electronics, and the battery sits at the centre of it.
Dual-battery systems
Many Land Rover and Range Rover models use more than one battery. Typically this means a main starting battery plus a smaller auxiliary or backup battery that supports start-stop functions, safety systems and electrical loads when the main battery is under strain.
The number, size and location of the batteries vary by model and year. They can sit under a seat, in the boot floor or in the engine bay. If the vehicle has two batteries and only one is replaced, or the wrong type is fitted, problems can follow.
AGM and start-stop batteries
Most modern Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles are designed for AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries, built to handle repeated start-stop cycles and heavy electrical demand. A standard flooded battery is not a like-for-like substitute and may wear out far sooner.
If you want a deeper look at the difference, read our guide to EFB vs AGM batteries.
The Battery Management System (BMS)
The vehicle's battery management system (BMS) monitors the battery's state of charge and health, and adjusts how the alternator charges it. It does this based on what it believes is installed: the battery's type, capacity and age.
If you fit a new battery and the BMS still thinks the old one is in place, it keeps charging to the old battery's profile.
Why Battery Registration (BMS Reset) Is Non-Negotiable
Registering a new battery (also called coding, a BMS reset or battery adaptation) tells the vehicle that a new battery has been installed and what type and size it is. Skipping this step can lead to:
Incorrect charging, where a new battery is undercharged or overcharged
A shorter battery life, sometimes much shorter than expected
Warning lights or messages on the dash
Start-stop or other systems being disabled
Electrical faults that can be hard and expensive to trace later
This is why a battery swap on a European vehicle is no longer a simple driveway job. We cover the wider issue in our article on the hidden complexity of European car battery replacement.
Why Dealership Quotes Can Be So High
Dealerships offer genuine value for warranty work and complex repairs. But for a battery replacement, owners often find the quote includes a premium for the badge: higher parts pricing, labour charged at main-dealer rates, and the booking and wait time that goes with a service department.
The battery itself is only part of that cost. The registration step, which is the part that seems technical, is a short job when done with the right equipment and know-how.
We recently saved a customer over $400 on a battery replacement for their Mercedes-Benz, and in many cases we can save you hundreds of dollars on European vehicles compared to dealership mechanical services. The same principle applies to Range Rover and Land Rover owners: the right battery, correctly fitted and registered, without the main-dealer markup.
Savings vary by vehicle and the battery you choose. Call us for a quote.

Signs Your Range Rover or Land Rover Battery Needs Attention
Slow or sluggish engine start
Warning messages about the battery, charging system or start-stop
Start-stop system no longer working
Flickering lights or electronic glitches
Electrical features misbehaving, such as the infotainment screen resetting
A battery that is several years old
These symptoms do not always mean the battery is the problem, but the battery is the first and cheapest thing to check. We offer free battery testing at both stores. You can also read our guide on how to check car battery voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Range Rover battery replacement cost in Sydney?
The price depends on your model, whether it has a main and auxiliary battery, and the brand you choose. In many cases we could save you up to 40% on battery and installation compared with car dealer servicing, though savings vary by vehicle and the battery you choose. Call us or send a photo of your battery and registration for a quote before you commit.
Do Land Rover batteries need to be coded or registered?
In most modern models, yes. The vehicle's battery management system needs to know a new battery has been fitted so it charges correctly. Skipping registration can shorten the battery's life and trigger warnings.
Does my Range Rover have two batteries?
Many models have a main battery plus a smaller auxiliary battery, but it depends on the model and year. Send us your rego and we will confirm.
Can I replace a Range Rover battery myself?
The physical swap can be simple, but without registering the new battery you risk charging problems and a shorter battery life. On a modern European vehicle we recommend having it done by someone with the right equipment.
Do I have to go to the dealership to keep my warranty?
If your vehicle is under a manufacturer's warranty, check your warranty terms and consult the dealer or manufacturer if you are unsure. In Australia, consumers generally have the right to use a qualified independent provider for servicing and parts. Contact us and we can talk through your situation.
Do you replace Range Rover batteries at my home or workplace?
Yes, in Sydney's inner west and western suburbs. Call us to confirm your area, availability and a quote.
What type of battery does a Land Rover need?
Most modern Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles require an AGM battery of the correct size and rating. We confirm the correct specification for your vehicle before you buy.
