Understanding Holden Commodore Battery Fitments by Generation
Commodores across generations have very different battery configurations — getting the wrong type can cause premature failure, cabin gas buildup, or insufficient cranking power for high-compression engines.
VT, VX, VY & VZ Series (1997–2006) — Under-Bonnet Fitment
Standard under-bonnet fitment. The 3.8L V6 Ecotec and 5.7L V8 Gen III engines require a robust maintenance-free unit with good vibration resistance.
Recommended: 58MF / DIN53LH — 520–620 CCA for V6; upgrade to 640+ CCA for V8 models.
VE Series I & II (2006–2013) — Boot-Mounted Rear Battery
Rear boot fitment for 50:50 weight distribution. Requires rear-vented European DIN units with external vent tubes — standard sealed batteries are not safe in a boot environment.
Recommended: DIN66H / LN3 — 640–720 CCA.
VF Series I & II (2013–2017) — Boot-Mounted, Higher Demand
Boot-mounted with higher electrical loads and the 6.0L/6.2L LS3 V8 in SS and HSV variants.
Recommended: DIN77H / LN4 AGM — 720–850 CCA. HSV models should use the upper end.
ZB Commodore (2018–2020) — European Platform, ISS AGM
Opel-derived platform with smart charging and Start-Stop. A standard flooded battery will fail rapidly and trigger fault codes.
Recommended: DIN66AGM / LN3 AGM — 700–800 CCA.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is the battery in my VE or VF Commodore in the boot?
A: Holden shifted it to the rear for 50:50 weight distribution and to protect it from engine bay heat, significantly increasing battery life.
Q: Do boot-mounted Commodore batteries require a vent pipe?
A: Yes. Batteries release trace hydrogen gas during charging. A boot-mounted unit must have an external vent hose — we always fit this correctly on every VE/VF installation.
Q: Will a standard 500 CCA battery start my 6.0L V8 SS?
A: We strongly recommend 720–850 CCA for V8 models to ensure reliable cranking year-round.
Q: Can I fit a standard battery in my ZB Commodore?
A: No. The ZB requires an AGM unit. A standard flooded battery will fail rapidly and trigger fault codes.
